Chloe and Tom, aged 10 and 7

For many years Chloe and Tom had been exposed to domestic violence. Their father was a chronic alcoholic who had been in and out of work, losing jobs because of his alcoholism. He sometimes disappeared for days or weeks on binges and, when he returned, he would be violent towards their mother. The children often witnessed these scenes, which would escalate to a point where mother would have to escape from the house and seek refuge. Eventually she left father and moved to another part of the country to live with her older brother and his wife.
